Amidst a vibrant display of Yoruba culture and spiritual devotion, the Araba Awo of Ijoka Kingdom, High Chief Dr. Ifadamilare Ifadero Ajayi, has called on government leaders to embrace traditional religious interventions to combat the rising tide of kidnapping and banditry in Nigeria.
The call was made during the grand finale of the Ifa Festival in Akure, which drew hundreds of adherents from across the Southwest and Kogi State.
High Chief Ajayi asserted that the spiritual tools used by Yoruba ancestors remain potent weapons against contemporary crime. He argued that the state government should empower traditional institutions to deploy spiritual "deterrents" against bad actors.
The Araba explained that through specific sacrifices, evil-doers can be spiritually "confused," preventing attacks before they occur.
He specifically cited Ogun (the god of iron) and Sango as forces capable of fighting those plotting harm against the state.
"Our governors in the Southwest should encourage traditional religion," Ajayi stated. "It is more effective to protect the land than any other way."
The event was marked by a blend of solemn rituals and communal celebration, despite a heavy downpour that the Araba interpreted as a divine omen of peace.
"We prayed for this country, for Ondo State, and for our leaders... We specifically sought protection against kidnappers, that they should not come near our land." High Chief Dr. Ifadamilare Ifadero Ajayi
Participating States: Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Ekiti, Lagos, and Kogi.
Deities Honored: Ifa, Ogun, Egungun, and ancestral spirits.
Prayers for the cessation of kidnapping, banditry, and civil unrest.
Beyond the festivities, the event reignited a regional conversation on the role of indigenous belief systems in modern governance. Supporters of the Araba's message believe that blending traditional wisdom with state security strategies could provide a unique, localized solution to the insecurity plaguing the region.
As the festival concluded, attendees expressed a renewed sense of hope, viewing the peaceful conduct of the event as a stepping stone toward a more secure and "spiritually fortified" Ondo State.
